Marine Radio Courses

Did you know...

Under federal regulations, you need an operating certificate to use a VHF and HF radio:

  • The Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ) is ideal for casual boaters who only need to operate a marine radio in Australian waters (within 12 nautical miles of the coast). If you use a VHF marine radio in Australian territorial waters (within 12 nautical miles of the coast) and do not have an AWQ, you may be breaching the Radiocommunications Act 1992.

  • The Marine Radio Short Range Operator’s VHF Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) is for VHF radio and is preferred for commercial use where short range communication is needed.

  • The Marine Radio Operator’s Long Range Certificate of Proficiency (LROCP) is for VHF and MF/HF radio and is preferred for commercial use where short and long range communications is needed.

A number of Coast Guard Flotillas across the country run either an AWQ, SROCP or LROCP course frequently throughout the year (dependent on numbers).

These courses are a great way to obtain your marine radio license while supporting your local Coast Guard Flotilla.

Price: Contact local flotilla for pricing or more information and includes all required materials and training.
